[Continued]
Emil Schumacher’s oeuvre shows his spectators the ambivalence of the opposing terms of the 20th century, abstraction and representation, and dissolves them in a playful way. His paintings are first and foremost the object itself, because of their emphasized materiality exceptionally concrete even if abstract in its representation. At the same time, all his creative periods portray figurative elements which, in their simplicity, remind us of cave paintings or hieroglyphs, which do not intend to mirror the appearance but rather the character of the subject.
