Emil Schumacher’s relationship to color was haptic and characterized by his strong interest in skilled handling of his material. Therefore, Schumacher mixed his pigments himself, elevating the materiality of the pigments to a central element of his paintings. His preferred colors were blue, red and yellow, broken through by black arches or lines. The most impressive characteristic of his art is the sensual luminosity of his paintings which stand in dramatic contrast to the usually fragile surface of his paintings.
